What is a DEXA Scan?

A DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry, also known as Bone Densitometry, is a quick, non-invasive test used to measure bone mineral density (BMD). It helps assess the strength of your bones, detect osteoporosis in its early stages, and evaluate your risk of fractures.

The scan uses a low dose of X-rays to accurately measure the calcium and mineral content in areas like the hip, spine, or forearm, where fractures are most likely to occur.

Bone densitometry is the gold standard for diagnosing low bone mass and is especially recommended for:

  • Women over 65 and men over 70
  • Postmenopausal women with risk factors
  • Individuals with a history of fractures or long-term steroid use
  • Patients undergoing treatment for bone loss (to monitor progress)

It’s painless, fast, and requires no special preparation, making it an essential tool for proactive bone health management.

It also helps your doctor determine how quickly you are losing bone mass as well as predict your risk of fracture.
